Introduction

This new university certificate aims to train conference interpreters—both deaf and hearing—who are already certified and experienced in interpreting in a national sign language to work in International Sign (IS) for European Union institutions.

Based at the UCLouvain’s Saint-Louis Brussels campus, the certificate programme aims to equip students with highly specialised skills in both theory and practice. Through a combination of face-to-face and online learning sessions, as well as independent study, participants will engage with highly specialised theoretical aspects. Practical skills will be developed through placements within European Parliament, via observation and hands-on practice, with the support of dedicated mentors during the university course.

Programme

The ten-month course focuses on the acquisition of specialist skills: it aims to train experienced interpreters so that they acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to interpret in International Sign within the EU institutions. Participants will gain theoretical knowledge of EU institutions and processes, improve their command of IS in European contexts, and strengthen their conference interpreting skills within EU institutions.

The training is supported and delivered in collaboration with the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) and the European Union of the Deaf Youth (EUDY).
