Main themes
This course introduces the main historical frameworks of Mediterranean antiquity, highlighting the variety of sources, major trends in historiography and a number of research issues.
Mainly focused on Greek and Roman history, from the neolithization of the Hellenic peninsula to the fall of Rome, the course also offers an introduction to the history of the Ancient Near East and the various civilizations established around the Mediterranean.
Various issues are addressed, touching on political, social, cultural and religious structures and their evolution, with a focus on interactions between the peoples considered.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • Master a foundation of knowledge in the fields of history, philosophy, arts and literature.
  • Articulate this knowledge in a historical, social and cultural context.

  • Interpret an event, work, image or text in its historical, social and cultural context.
  • Evaluate the significance of cultural productions in a given society and account for their circulation.
  • Open up to other cultures, means of communication and expression, and perspectives.

  • Reflect on knowledge, methods and productions.
 
4 Learning outcomes specific to the teaching unit:
  • Master the chronology and main frameworks of the history of Antiquity.
  • Master the development of historical knowledge by examining a number of sources and works.
  • Be able to draw on a "portfolio of readings" to identify some major research issues.
