Prerequisites
Students will have been introduced to the characteristics of medieval French. 
Main themes
The course includes both linguistic training - following on from the History of the French Language course - and training in literary analysis. 
The course will focus on the following themes:  
  • The emergence and development of French-language literature 
  • The most representative literary genres of medieval French literature (12th to 15th centuries) 
  • The main features of medieval French: morphology, syntax, phonetics and vocabulary. 
  • The main phenomena in the evolution from Bas-Latin to Old French 
  • Literary and stylistic analysis of medieval texts, with particular attention to the literary techniques specific to each of the genres. 
The 10 hours of practical work will be devoted to the translation and linguistic analysis of the texts on the programme. 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Characterise the literary genres specific to early French literature 
 
2 Identify the texts of the programme and situate them in their production context 
 
3 Translating extracts from Old and Middle French into modern French 
 
4 Identify and explain the main characteristics of medieval French 
 
5 Carry out a literary analysis of the texts of the programme 
 
This learning unit contributes to the development and command of the following skills and learning outcomes of the ELAL programmes: 1.4, 1.5, 1.6., 2.6., 3.6., 4.3.
