Main themes
In this course, we study the cultural life of the Dutch-speaking regions, with specific attention to their varied artistic life within its broader historical context. 
This course also contributes to developing the students’ research and academic reading competences, their understanding and use of critical and scientific texts and discourses about cultural reproductions and representations in Dutch.  
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Give an overview of the developments in the cultural life of the Dutch-speaking regions; to situate and explain it; 
 
2 Understand and analyse cultural products and representations of Dutch-speaking culture within a given period;
 
3 Adopt a critical attitude towards the traditional artistic canon, identitary concepts and historical/national/artistic classifications;
 
4 Apply the necessary reading competences, critical understanding of the sources and writing competences to produce a personal scientific contribution that respects the academic conventions and expectations of the domain of Dutch Studies.
 
This learning unit contributes to the development and command of the following skills and learning outcomes of the ELAL programmes: 3.5 ; 3.6 ; 5.6.
