Teaching methods
BHDPO1190 – Q1 and Q2: (45 hours in total)
Communicative, interactive and in-depth approach.
There is one hour of English class per week in Q1 and two hours in Q2.
Class hours are mainly devoted to oral and written expression activities and listening exercises, focusing on everyday situations (practical English) and related to specific areas.
A grammar test is proposed in the first class (Q1 and Q2) to help students better assess their own level.
An optional exemption test is also organised online at the beginning of Q1: students who feel strong in English can take it and must obtain at least 16/20. Students who obtain a sufficient mark in the written test, corresponding to at least 16/20, will keep this mark throughout the year (Q1 and Q2). The test is organised only once. The procedures for registering for the exemption test will be communicated by the Faculty Administration.

(Q1) Term 1: (40% of the final course mark):
Written examination /20 (compulsory – outside the examination period, December): the written assessment covers basic grammar, vocabulary, written expression, listening comprehension and reading comprehension.
The final term mark may be increased by (up to) 10% for active student participation. To this end, two assessment sessions will be organised in class during each term. Your teacher will specify the date and the parts to be prepared at least one week in advance on the dedicated course page on Moodle.
This part (10% for active participation in Q1) cannot be carried over to the next session's mark.
When a mark of 10/20 or higher is obtained for the first term subject, it results in an exemption from the Q1 subject for the rest of the year (no resits in May and/or August).
If the mark is less than 10/20, the student must retake the first term subject in May (outside the exam period) and/or in August (during the exam period).
Q2: Second term (60% of the final course mark):
Oral examination /10 (compulsory – outside the examination period, May): individual oral presentation on a topic agreed with the teacher at the beginning of the second term.

If the mark is less than 10/2 for the second term and a final mark lower than 10/20 for the EU (June), the student will have to retake the second term subject in the August session.

Other information
An A2 level is recommended in order to participate effectively. This course does not review the basics of English.
It is essential that students consult Moodle at least once a week and read ALL announcements, information and documents posted.
Participation in interactive classes is strongly recommended.
Use of generative artificial intelligence(or any other online tool, such as translators, spell checkers, grammar checkers, etc.)
If the student chooses to use one or more AI tools (or any other online tool), he or she is required to systematically indicate all parts that have been subject to such use, e.g. in footnotes. The student must specify whether the AI was used to search for information, to write the text, or to improve or correct it. In addition, the student must mention which AI was used (ChatGPT, Bing, Bard, Chatsonic, etc.) and the date on which it was used. These sources of information shall be systematically cited in accordance with the bibliographic referencing standards indicated by the course lecturer. Students remain responsible for the content of their work, regardless of the sources used.
In order to ensure that the student's written work is original, criteria such as originality, critical thinking, creativity and illustration with examples (e.g. from their own experience) will be taken into account.
Any behaviour on the part of the student that prevents or attempts to prevent, in whole or in part, a correct assessment of their knowledge, skills and/or competences will be considered an irregularity that could result in sanctions.
See the charter: ‘Commitment to Integrity’ in the course syllabus.
Absence at your exam(s)
During each examination session, a mark will only be awarded for the teaching unit if all parts of the assessment have been completed (excluding continuous assessment).
Any attendance mark (0/20), unjustified absence (0A) or absence with a medical certificate (0M) for any part of the examination (written and/or oral) will be the overall mark for the session. In this case, all parts of the examination for the term in question must be retaken during the following session.
If a student is unable to sit one or more examinations, they must notify the faculty administration by email within 24 hours of becoming aware that they will be absent, copying in their teacher. Proof of absence (medical certificate) must be sent by email only to the faculty administration no later than the first working day following the end of the absence.
For exams outside the exam session, a 'note of attendance' must be requested no later than the day before the exam by sending an email to the faculty administration, copying in your teacher.
