Content
Culture (Q2): The second term will be devoted to an in-depth study of Italian culture. Ms Fontana will deal with different periods, from the Middle Ages to Romanticism, covering contents related to art, music (opera) and literature. Mr Ferrari will look at contemporary Italian culture, looking at topics such as cinema, comics, fiction and non-fiction, the singer-songwriter genre and politics.
Teaching methods
Students perform language tasks in front of the class or in small groups. In order for the lessons to run smoothly, these oral and written assignments must be prepared in advance by studying vocabulary and content from various sources such as newspaper articles and essays, audio and video files that are to be mastered before each lesson. During oral presentations, students present the results of their research based on reliable written and video sources, including the vocabulary related to the chosen content. If time permits, they may also lead a short debate.
Evaluation methods
The calculation of the final examination grade is based on the average of the grades obtained in the respective parts of Mr. Ferrari and Ms. Fontana.
Regarding the assessment methods adopted by both professors, the following is specified:
For the part of the course taught by Mr Ferrari:
Q2: Continuous assessment including two oral presentations (the dates of these presentations will be announced on the first day of class) and an oral exam during the June exam session.
During the August session, students will be examined on the course material according to the content of the syllabus to be represented. This will be an oral exam.
For the part of the course taught by Ms Fontana:
Q2: Continuous assessment including an oral presentation, a written assignment analysing a literary/artistic work, and the preparation of a research paper on a chosen topic. Deadlines and modalities will be announced within the first two weeks of class on the course’s Moodle page.
August session: Students will be examined on three topics covered in class during the term. Specifically: the student must choose one topic to prepare and send their PPT presentation to the professor no later than 5 working days before the exam; the student will also be examined on two other topics chosen by the professor. This will be an oral exam.
In case of failure in the AA (learning activity), students are invited to consult the breakdown of marks on the course’s Moodle page. A mark equal to or higher than 10/20 for a part of the course will be automatically carried over to the second (or third) session and cannot be retaken, provided that all parts have been presented.
Class attendance is strongly recommended: 2 unjustified absences are allowed per term. Beyond these, each additional absence must be justified by a medical certificate or a duly substantiated written excuse.
Other information
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in written assignments or oral presentations is prohibited, unless an exception has been granted by the instructor. If AI is used without authorization, it will be treated as academic misconduct, resulting in a grade of ‘0T’ (cheating), as it undermines the teacher’s ability to accurately assess the student's skills.
