At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

On completing this Unit first year students should demonstrate that he is able to :

- Understand a range of simple signed messages (dialogues from everyday life, factual stories, descriptions) articulated by one or several standard native signers;
- Have an oral command of the vocabulary related to the topics studied during the course;
- Be able to identify the key information in a message (people, time, place, key facts) and identify the words that form a lexical field in context, and relate them with precision in context;
- Be able to demonstrate their understanding, both in general and detailed terms, of such signed messages, both orally and in writing, by answering questions, telling a story, asking questions of their peers;
- Be able to reformulate messages in LSFB using cognitive abilities (analysis, reasoning) and by applying rules of grammar in context (iconicity, tense, sign language lexicon) and be able to use circumlocution for concepts that do not have a specific sign;
- Be able to react rapidly to relatively simple signed messages from the tutor;
- Be able to recall the content of observed signed messages;
- Be able to adapt observed signed messages or produce signed messages following specific instructions or standard models;
- Possess a wide range of synonyms and antonyms, possess a rich lexicon and understand the words studied during the course;
- Be able to sign while ensuring lexical correctness (respecting parameters).
 
Content
The course will be structured around several sequences related to the daily life of the Deaf community.
Students will learn to express themselves in LSFB on a variety of themes.
They will be required to:
  • study vocabulary related to these themes in semi-autonomous learning;
  • work on manual and non-manual expression (eyebrows, gaze, facial expressions, body posture…);
  • respect the parameters of LSFB and develop fluency in signing;
  • adopt an appropriate attitude towards Deaf people (eye contact, posture, use of space, attention to visual communication).
External guests may be invited to engage in conversations with the students.
In addition, students will use the camera (“visiosign”) not only as a tool for self-correction (recording their productions, watching them back, and analyzing their errors, in the same way written text is used for vocal languages), but also as a regular learning tool: guided exercises and homework assignments in visiosign will be an integral part of the course.
A variety of comprehension and production activities in visiosign will thus be offered, training students to produce, correct, and progressively improve their LSFB skills.

Exercises (practical work in the laboratory, tutorials, simulations, dialogues, etc.)
In the second semester, a portfolio handed out during the first class will be completed by the student, including their productions, reflections on the activities recorded, as well as a personal analysis.

Attendance at classes is mandatory. Absence from more than one third of the sessions, or unjustified failure to submit more than one third of the written assignments within the prescribed deadlines, will result in refusal of registration for the exam.
Evaluation methods
First semester
Midterm assessment (30%): video test and interactions with the instructor
Final assessment (70%): video test and interactions with the instructor and/or in group
Second semester
Midterm assessment (30%): video test and interactions with the instructor
Final assessment (70%): video test and interactions with the instructor and/or in group, with 30% based on the portfolio
