Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Students from all faculties and options are encouraged to participate in the seminar. You do not need to be perfectly fluent in English, or comfortable speaking in public, and no prior knowledge of the UN or international institutions is required to enrol. The seminar is based on learning by doing, and although it requires strong commitment and hard work, it is a nice and solid experience to develop your skills.
You will learn and work on your research skills, and more generally on your soft skills (social contact, negotiating in another language, working in a multicultural environment, public speaking, improvisation, critical thinking, interdisciplinary approach to a topic, etc.), develop your global awareness of world issues, create massive networking opportunities and boost your self-confidence and personal development.

Content
  1. Theoretical part providing a framework of knowledge on the UN, its functioning, organs, main issues of debate.
  2. Specific part for each simulation, practice and logistics composed of various sessions supervised by the Head Delegates (former students), the incumbent and / or the assistants, separately for each delegation. The purpose of these sessions is to learn the rules specific to the chosen simulation as well as practice the various aspects of the simulation (oral presentations, writing, rules of procedure, mini- simulations, etc.).
  3. Actual simulations, in Belgium and abroad (each delegate will participate either to LiMUN London, NMUN New York, or MUN Rome).
Teaching methods
The course is taught in person; it is divided into three parts: theoretical sessions, practical sessions and simulation(s).
The seminar is organised during both semesters of the academic year. Classes will continue after the simulations abroad with a series of sessions including testimonies from witnesses and resource persons active in international diplomacy.
NB: since the seminar includes a trip abroad, with the financial support of the university, a selection process will be organised if the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available. The modalities of the selection process are published in the beginning of each academic year on the Moodle page of the course.
Evaluation methods
The final mark for the seminar is based on several criteria:
  • Participation during the whole year (2 semesters): attending the seminars, developing expertise on the assigned country and theme, preparing readings and speeches as requested, progress in public speaking exercises, etc.
  • Quality of the position paper (written exercise)
  • Participation in the actual simulations in London, New York, or Rome. The destinations may be subject to adjustment due to specific constraints.
Additional marks will be granted in case of official recognition by the organisers, of the delegation of a specific delegate, and/or of a position paper.
Unsatisfactory participation during the year will result in exclusion from the trip and the simulation abroad. No marks (0/20) will be awarded in case of absence from the simulation abroad.
This teaching activity (UE) cannot be retaken during the August exam session.
NB : Generative artificial intelligence (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity. This implies that anyone using generative AIs in a way that is not consistent with their intended use is committing an irregularity within the meaning of art. 107 of the RGEE (non-personal production by the student as part of an assessment). Permitted uses of AI will be specified in class and on the course Moodle page. In all cases, those using generative AI will be required to make explicit mention of it in the terms and conditions communicated in this respect, and to keep an accessible verbatim record of the requests made to the AI and the responses given, as well as the date on which the exchange took place.
