Prerequisites

The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

As studies of French and Romance Language and Literature are centred on the linguistic and literary areas, the knowledge acquired in first year will be developed and completed by the study of Spanish and Hispano American literature and through a more systematic approach of diachronic and synchronic linguistics. It will also enable the students to familiarise themselves with authentic sources (oral and written) as well as reference documents in linguistic and literature.
The course also emphasises oral expression: presentations, commentary and analysis of literary texts as well as the mastery of the written language through writing summaries and essays.
It will encourage the students to have an active attitude and carry out personal work in the library for instance.

At the end of the course students will have reached the B1-B2 level defined by the Common European Framework of Reference.

Content
This course focuses on developing and deepening Spanish language skills through practical language learning. It aims to provide in-depth knowledge of morphology, vocabulary, grammar and syntax, which are essential for developing language communication skills in both reception (understanding written and spoken texts from different language registers) and production (oral and written expression in monologue and interaction in different communication situations).

As language and literature studies are structured around the mastery of languages, their literatures, history and cultures, language learning is achieved by addressing topics related to Spanish and Latin American literature, as well as the art, culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world. In addition, it is combined with a reflective linguistic analysis of the different uses and effects of meaning in authentic communication contexts, and the course aims to teach the appropriate linguistic terminology.
Teaching methods
This teaching unit is delivered in person and includes lectures that introduce key linguistic themes and content, followed by practical exercises sessions focusing on communicative language skills (both production and reception) as well as morphological, grammatical, lexical, syntactic and linguistic content. The in-person classes require active participation from students and must be supplemented by daily independent study.

The course materials used during the sessions (PowerPoint presentations, vocabulary lists, exercises, etc.) are made available to students on Moodle. In addition, other materials (additional exercises and useful resources) can also be downloaded from this platform.
Evaluation methods
At the end of each term, a final mark is given whose repartition is:
1st term:
  • 30%: Ongoing evaluation of vocabulary and grammar (see calendar on Moodle)
  • 70%: final written and oral examination assessing all the skills and content from the first-term course
2nd term:
  • 30%: Individual portfolio focusing on writing different types of discourse
  • 70%: final written examination + oral examination based on the student’s portfolio and a linguistic reflection
Final mark of the UE: 1st term 40%, 2nd term 60%.

During the second session, assessment is based on a written and an oral examination covering all the course content.

In accordance with Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), the teachers may propose to the jury that a student who has not completed the required stages of the educational programme be denied registration for the examination. In case of absence from an assessment, students must provide a medical certificate to the teachers within 48 hours of the assessment. In this case, the assessment will not be postponed or included in the final assessment. If a medical certificate is not provided, the students will be given a mark of 0 for the assessment in question.

Furthermore, for any task that is subject to assessment, any use of generative AI, other than those explicitly authorised in the course instructions, is prohibited and will be considered cheating, under the terms of the RGEE. In case of suspected cheating, the teachers may summon the students concerned. The students must be able to demonstrate oral mastery of the content developed in their work. In this case, failure in either the written or oral assessment results in failure of the entire examination.
Other information
Any modification (content, evaluation, schedule, etc.) will be communicated by Moodle.
