Main themes
This interdisciplinary course aims to: (1) Introduce architecture students to key concepts in urban sociology and social geography, including urban segregation, residential vulnerability, discrimination, symbolic violence, minorities, urban communities, gender, decolonialism, and empowerment. (2) Equip students with research methodologies aligned with the epistemology of power relations as they relate to space, from public to domestic realms. (3) Present international case studies of urban policies and innovative citizen-led initiatives that promote co-presence, participation, and inclusiveness in urban environments.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • Analyze and articulate the connections between power dynamics and the production of space,
  • Understand and critically assess the key challenges of spatial justice,
  • Develop critical, reflective, and forward-looking insights on the production of contemporary cities, addressing both ‘standardized’ models and ‘innovative’ approaches, such as inclusive design, cities of care, and participatory habitats,
  • Engage in rigorous, well-argued debates on scientific and critical texts concerning spatial justice and power relations in spatial contexts.
