Students have reached a B2 proficiency level in English (productive and receptive skills) and must be accepted in the programme where the course is taught.  
Main themes
  1. Quantitative and qualitative development of academic English language within the students' fields of specialisation. 
  2. Improvement of written skills (specific style and register of formal academic writing in English). 
  3. Improvement of oral skills (specific style and register of oral presentations in formal academic context in English). 
Content
Academic English is a specific genre with its own stylistic and linguistic characteristics. This course addresses the typical rhetorical functions of academic English, both written and oral, within the students' fields of specialisation. 
Teaching methods
  • Presentation of content (for example, the specific structure and style of an academic essay, domain-specific vocabulary) and provision of useful resources and tools for written and oral presentations in academic English. 
  • Exemplification and discussion: examples illustrating key points + classroom discussion.  
  • Practice: individual or group work on practical exercises. 
  • Feedback and correction: individual and/or collective feedback. 
  • Evaluation: assignments or projects can be used to measure the students' progress. 
Evaluation methods
Written paper and oral defense of the written paper.
