Main themes
  • The fundamental concepts and principles of sporting ethics, sporting integrity and professional deontology in the sporting professions.
  • Ethical reasoning through the analysis of case studies (inclusion, good governance, protection of athletes, rigging, etc.) in the multidisciplinary (performance, health and management), multicultural and (inter)national context of sport.
  • The causes, forms and consequences of ethical and unethical behaviour and practices in sport.
  • The moral and strategic reasons for sporting integrity.
  • Theories of ethical decision-making.
  • Policies and practices to prevent integrity problems.
  • The stages and key factors in managing sporting integrity from a micro (individual), meso (organisational) and macro (organizational) perspective.
  • Ethical leadership and individual responsibility: the moral integrity of individuals and organisational players in sport.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • Explain and analyse the principles and different approaches to ethics, integrity and deontology in sport (1.1., 1.4., 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, 7.4 and 1.11)
  • Identify and analyse the causes, forms and consequences of ethical and unethical behaviour and practices in sport (1.1., 1.5., 3.4., 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, 7.4 and 1.11)
  • Identify and analyse the moral and strategic reasons why players in the world of sport commit to integrity (1.1., 1.5., 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, 7.4 and 1.11)
  • Identify and analyse the steps and elements that facilitate and prevent integrity management in sport and appreciate best practice in this area (1.1., 1.5., 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, 7.4 and 1.11)
  • Critically examine issues relating to integrity in sport (1.1., 1.4., 3.4., 4.1, 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, 7.4 and 1.11)
  • Make ethical judgements about their involvement in sport (1.1., 1.4., 3.4., 4.1, 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, and 7.4) 7.4).
  • Apply theories of decision-making and ethical leadership to various ethical issues in sport (1.1., 7.1., 7.2., 7.3., 7.4).
  • Communicate appropriately to different audiences in the world of sport on the basis of ethical reasoning and relevant scientific literature on an ethical issue in sport (1.1., 1.4., 1.5., 3.4., 4.1, 4.2., 4.3., 4.4, 4.5, 7.1, 7.2., 7.3, and 7.4).
