Prerequisites

The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Main themes
This learning unit deals with the construction of the complex sentence in present-day standard Spanish, paying attention to the pronominal paradigm, verbal morphology and syntax.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Use the correct pronominal and verbal forms at sentence level and construct simple and complex sentences in current standard Spanish.

2 Explain the choice of a verb form or syntactic structure in an authentic text (a corpus) using the appropriate grammatical and linguistic terminology. To achieve this aim, the student will be able to analyse the sentence and its constituents from a morphosyntactic point of view (identify the different categories of words, phrases, syntactic functions, main and subordinate clauses and connectors) and identify the argument structure and aspect of the predicate.

3 Use the main corpora of the Spanish language to rely on a trustworthy empirical analysis with a view to improving their knowledge of Spanish and with a view to the linguistic analysis of the phenomena covered in the course.

Consequently, this course brings together aims related to normative grammar (aim 1), descriptive grammar (aim 2) and linguistic methodology (aim 3).

This learning unit contributes to the development and command of the following skills and learning outcomes of the ELAL programmes: 1.4, 2.6, 3.5, 5.1, 5.2, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5

Content
- Syntactic analysis of standard contemporary Spanish, using the correct terminology.
- Introducing the use of Spanish corpora from a didactic and analytic perspective.
- Contribute to language proficiency through linguistic analysis.
Teaching methods
The course will be divided in two parts : group sessions (CM) and practice sessions in smaller groups (TP).
The group sessions will focus on the acquisition of the analytical schemes and on the descriptive approach of the data. In addition, a critical reflection concerning the contribution of corpus searches will be included. Student participation is considered the central point of the learning process.
The practice sessions will focus on practicing the analytical strategies.
The students will be required to prepare analytical exercises and corpus searches.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation of this course is partly continuous and partly during the exam session.
The continuous part consists of a paper written in pairs (6/20) : the calendar and a more detailed description will be published on Moodle. If the student uses generative artificial intelligence tools, this has to be done in a responsible way and in compliance with good practice standards of academic and scientific integrity. Since the scientific integrity implies that one cites one's sources, the use of AI always has to be mentioned. The use of AI for tasks where this has been explicitly forbidden will be considered a case of fraud.

The evaluation during the exam session consists of a written exam (14/20). This exam includes linguistic analysis questions. The students will have to show their capacity to offer a complete analysis, taking into account the context and using the correct terminology.
The August session consists of a written examen (14/20) and a paper (6/20). For the August resit, students who did not pass the written paper in the first session, should resubmit an improved version of the paper.
The evaluation is entirely in Spanish.
