Main themes
In-depth study of classical Latin grammar, mainly syntax, with a linguistic approach (origin and evolution of the structures of the language).
Both Level III courses (A and B) will cover a selection of chapters related to the syntax of the simple and complex sentence.
In addition, the student will learn additional vocabulary and translate short texts (versions) and long texts (cursive).

Content
In the Latin III course, the following topics will be covered (the list is not exhaustive)
- Case syntax (advanced level)
- The value of verbal moods and tenses in main clauses
- Indirect speech
- Indefinite pronouns
In parallel, students will read independently one Latin text per term (cursive readings). This year, it will be significant extracts from the works of Ovid and Livy.

Teaching methods
Alternating interactive class sessions (including an inversed class teaching activity) and practical work.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation of the learning outcomes will take place as follows:
- Continuous assessment (Part 1): regular tests on mastery of basic morphology and syntax, as well as translation tests during the practical sessions (TP). This component will count for 20% of the final grade (4/20). In case of failure in this part, an additional examination must be taken during the September session. Attendance at the practical sessions is mandatory: in the event of more than three unjustified absences, or failure to sit the evaluated tests and translations, the course holder may, pursuant to Article 72 of the RGEE, propose to the jury that the student be denied registration for the June or September session.
- Continuous assessment (Part 2): mastery of theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including prose composition) taught and practiced in class will be assessed through four written examinations, held in the middle and at the end of each of the two terms. The assessment will be cumulative. These four examinations together will account for 40% of the final grade (8/20). In case of failure, or justified absence from two or more of these examinations, a single (but more substantial) resit examination must be taken during the September session. IMPORTANT: in the case of unjustified absence from two or more examinations, the course holder may, pursuant to Article 72 of the RGEE, propose to the jury that the student be denied registration for the June or September session. As this is a biennial course, if registration for the examinations is authorised in a year when the course is not offered, this part will be assessed by means of a single written examination in session.
- Oral examination testing mastery of cursive reading. This examination will account for 40% of the final grade (8/20). It is divided between the January session (partial examination, 20% of the final grade) and the June session (20% of the final grade). In case of failure in the cursive reading examination in January and/or June, the resit examination will, in all cases, be held during the September session under the same conditions.
- IMPORTANT: The written and oral tests are two integrated parts of the final grade. Successful completion of both parts is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge defined in the learning outcomes of the course unit. Overall success therefore presupposes the successful completion of both the oral and written parts. If the pass mark is not reached in one of these two parts, it will ipso facto not be reached for the whole test.
