Main themes
The course covers a wide range of issues relating to the conservation of immovable heritage: the notion of historic monument and heritage; important milestones in the history of the conservation of immovable heritage and their impact on heritage conservation today; heritage structures and players at international and national level; the protection of immovable heritage in Belgium; conservation/restoration issues relating to certain architectural typologies.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
Students will gain an understanding of the tools, resources and issues involved in conserving real-estate heritage, while at the same time developing an awareness of architectural typologies. They will have acquired a critical eye for classification policies and the “values” attributed to heritage. |

Content
- History of real estate heritage conservation: focus on certain theorists and texts/charts.
- Conservation of immovable heritage in Belgium: players, legislation, protection instruments, heritage “values”.
- Architectural typologies and specific conservation issues (varies from year to year): rural architecture, religious architecture, urban architecture, industrial architecture, small-scale popular heritage.

Evaluation methods
Assessment will cover :
- The material covered in the course: oral examination
- The personal appropriation of certain concepts and issues through a personally chosen case study: written work with oral presentation.
