Main themes
Movable heritage will be approached through different but complementary approaches, covered in separate chapters: a theoretical viewpoint (notion of heritage, heritage inflation, etc. ), a historical point of view (charters, national and international institutions), a legislative point of view (conservation of movable heritage in Belgium), a preventive conservation point of view (the 10 agents of deterioration), a technical and material point of view (preventive conservation applied to different materials), an “applied” conservation point of view (conservation in museums and churches), a deontological point of view (restoration). 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The conservation and protection of movable heritage requires a wealth of technical and ethical knowledge. By the end of this course, students will have mastered the basics of preventive conservation. They will be familiar with and able to use the tools and resources that will enable them to act in the service of heritage. 
 
Content
  • The notion of heritage today and its challenges (historical, social, economic, political, etc.) 
  • History of the discipline: charters and institutions + useful online resources  
  • Conservation of movable heritage in Belgium: players, legislation, protection instruments 
  • Preventive conservation: the 10 agents of deterioration 
  • Preventive conservation applied to objects according to their materials (depending on the year): metal, paper, textile, wood, etc. 
  • Preventive conservation in museums and churches: case studies 
  • History and ethics of restoration (content may or may not be covered depending on the year)
Teaching methods
Lectures, exercises on the model of a flipped classroom.
