Main themes
An overview of Italian literary history.  
The broad outlines of Italian literature, from its origins to the present day, will be presented through the reading of poems, short stories and short texts. The characteristics of the various trends and periods will be explained, as well as the major historical events that have influenced literature or have been influenced by it. 
During the practical sessions students will learn to read and understand medieval, renaissance and baroque Italian texts. 
Content
A survey of the masterpieces of Italian literature, from the Middle Ages (Dante Alighieri) to the present day. The texts covered (mainly extracts) will be provided in a reading portfolio.
Teaching methods
The course consists of a series of lectures given in Italian. Students will be required to do their own reading on the material covered in the course, using a reading portfolio.
