Content
How does religion influence political change? How do political changes impact religious evolution? What are the major ethical challanges surrounding political religiosity nowadays? These are among the guiding questions of this course, which examines the political dimensions of religion. Alongside the study of central theories and concepts, particular attention will be given to contemporary issues at the intersection of religion and politics, including religious fundamentalism, religiously inspired violence, the role of religion in international relations, and the contribution of religion to peacebuilding.
Teaching methods
The course is structured around a series of lectures delivered by the instructor, enriched by active discussions that form an integral part of each session. External speakers may also be invited occasionally.
Evaluation methods
Evaluation is divided into two components: continuous assessment (20%) and a final written examination (80%). Continuous assessment involves active class participation and the writing of a blog post on the politics of religion, specifically linked to the course. The written exam, lasting two hours, will assess knowledge of key concepts and theories presented during the lectures and will also include questions inviting critical synthesis.
Other information
While the language of instruction for this course is French, accommodations are available for non-native speakers. Students may pose questions, engage in consultations with the instructor, and submit their assignments in English.
Online resources
A selection of scholarly texts and online resources will be made available on Moodle.
