Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Recognize the hybrid nature of a globalised society many aspects of which are anchored in modern as well as traditional legacies. The student will be able to better assess the heuristic or disciplinary split be-tween modern and traditional societies as a split that was made in the past, when it was believed that none of the traditional social bonds or forms would remain. He·she will have gained access to a field of empirical studies demonstrating the intricate interplay between modern and traditional legacies in various contemporary settings (economics, culture, law, …). Concepts such as “patchy capitalism”, “globalisation from below”, the “disjunctive order of globalised cultures”, or others who point to that interplay, shall be mastered by the student. Overall, the student will have a better knowledge of con-temporary global society as hybrid, modern-traditional.
