Main themes
The topics covered are selected in line with the learning outcomes of the programme and the communicative needs as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for level A1. 
They cover general and authentic communication situations related to daily, social and cultural life, such as greeting people, introducing oneself and others (countries, languages, numbers, the alphabet, academic background), studies and leisure (leisure activities and hobbies), food (dishes, ordering and paying), time and appointments (the time, days, seasons), family and friends (describing people).

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

In accordance with the learning outcomes (LO) for the Bachelor's programmes in ESPO and the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for the target level (A1), this course module contributes to the development and of the following LOs:  
 
  • Listening Comprehension (general) – A1 
    • recognise specific information about a familiar, everyday topic, provided that the speaker speaks slowly and clearly. 
    • understand instructions given slowly and clearly and follow short, simple instructions. 
 
  • Reading Comprehension (general) – A1 
    • get a general idea of the content of a simple informational text, and of short, straightforward descriptions, particularly when accompanied by visual material. 
    • understand short texts on topics of personal interest (e.g. news briefs on sport, music, travel or stories) if they are written in simple language and illustrated with pictures. 
 
  • Spoken Production (general) – A1 
    • produce short sentences to talk about oneself or others, and provide simple personal details (e.g. name, address, family situation, nationality). 
    • describe simple aspects of one’s daily life using a series of simple sentences, words or signs, and simple expressions, if given the opportunity to prepare in advance. 
 
  • Spoken Interaction (general) – A1 
    • ask and answer questions about oneself and one’s daily routines, using short set phrases and relying on gestures to reinforce the information given. 
 
  • Written Production (general) – A1 
    • provide information about personal matters (e.g. likes and dislikes, family, pets) using simple words and phrases.  
 
  • Written Interaction (general) – A1 
    • request or provide detailed personal information. 
 
  • General Linguistic Competence – A1 
    • use basic sentence patterns and communicate using memorised phrases, short phrases or signs, and set expressions about oneself, other people, what they do, places, objects, etc.
