Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1.	Identify and describe the main types of family policies, whether they pursue explicitly demographic and/or gender equality objectives or whether they have indirect effects in this area;
2.	Understand and utilize different approaches to evaluating family policies.

Content

Family policies continue to fuel public debate, whether the issue is budgetary restrictions, ideological approaches, or demographic and gender challenges. In the first part of the course, I will define and situate these policies in space and time. I will show the stakes and the theoretical, ethical and, sometimes, ideological foundations. I will then present the main approaches to evaluate a policy. This part of the course will alternate lectures and active learning methods. In the second part of the course, you will be confronted with a political decision-making process (fictitious or real) in order to produce a report that will inform the political decision makers.

The course combines lectures and active learning methods.

Evaluation methods

The course is based on continuous assessment (15% of the grade), a written project-based learning assignment (30%), and an oral presentation (55%). The continuous assessment will consist of an inquiry-based learning activity (5%) and a peer learning activity (10%).
In the second examination session, the continuous assessment grade will be retained, and the exam will involve revising the assignment and the oral presentation based on the individual feedback received during the copy viewing session (only possible on a single date communicated by the student secretariat).
The professor may propose to the jury to refuse the registration for the assessment of any student who has not regularly attended the course (i.e., more than four unjustified absences).
In this course, the use of AI is prohibited.

Other information

Prerequisite: the course « Introduction à la démographie » (SPED 1211) is recommended.
In code yellow, the auditorium is large enough to accommodate all the students. However, if the number of students is larger than expected or if the orange code is applied, then the teaching will be co-modal (half of the cohort in face-to-face, the other half in distance learning, alternating from one week to the next) or distance learning. Whatever the mode of teaching, the mode of evaluation remains the same. Classroom exercises are adapted to the health rules.
