The course aims to explore children’s rights in relation to current issues through the lens of the concept of advanced modernity
The course thus addresses the links between children’s rights, the ecological emergency, and the right to participation; children’s rights and new technologies and social media; the rights of child consumers and child workers; children’s rights as viewed through the lens of various systems of domination (gender, infantilism, etc.), domestic violence, as well as several questions surrounding the concept of minority status.
The course is structured around a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, it examines how children’s rights currently address these various themes. On the other hand, it examines how these current issues challenge or transform children’s rights.
Depending on the year, certain topics are covered in greater depth than others.
The approach is interdisciplinary.

Teaching methods
The course combines a variety of teaching methods: lectures and guest presentations, active learning (case studies/practical exercises; small-group role-playing or simulations; the flipped classroom, etc.). Depending on the year, one teaching method may be emphasized more than another.
In this context, students may be asked to prepare for classes using materials provided by the instructors. These materials consist of a reading packet, PowerPoint presentations, and video and audio resources.
The courses will also provide opportunities to meet guest speakers, whether they are subject matter experts or professionals working in the field.

Evaluation methods
A closed-book written exam that may, if applicable, take the form of a multiple-choice test or a take-home exam

Pre-requisite knowledge and skills
- The certificate in interdisciplinary approach to children's rights or the introductory course on children's rights given at the beginning of the Master's degree;
- The Master's course "History and philosophy of children's rights";

Online resources
The student must register on the ULB Virtual University to have access to the powerpoints and the texts to be read as well as to deposit the documents and comments requested for the evaluations.
