LESP1181: Spanish A1-B1 (linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic skills)

The prerequisites for this teaching unit (UE) are specified at the end of this sheet, alongside the programs/courses that offer this UE.
Main themes
The course covers the pronominal paradigm, verbal morphology, and the syntax of complex sentences in modern standard Spanish.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Use the correct pronominal and verbal forms at the sentence level and construct correct simple and complex sentences in modern standard Spanish.

2 Explain the choice of a verb form or syntactic structure in an authentic text (a corpus) using the appropriate grammatical and linguistic terminology. To achieve this objective, students will be able to analyze the sentence and its constituents from a morphosyntactic point of view (identifying the different categories of words, phrases, syntactic functions, main and subordinate clauses) and identify the argument structure of the predicate.

Content
  • Syntactic analysis of current standard Spanish, using correct terminology.
  • Introduction to the use of Spanish corpora from an analytical and didactic perspective.
  • Through linguistic analysis, contribute to progress in language proficiency.
Teaching methods
The course will be divided into two parts: joint group sessions and group exercise sessions (practical work). The joint group sessions will focus on acquiring analytical frameworks and a descriptive approach to data. In addition, critical reflection on the potential contribution of corpus research will be incorporated into the course. Student participation is designed to be the central focus of learning.
The exercises will focus on the practical application of these analytical strategies.
Students will be asked to prepare analytical exercises and corpus research exercises.
Evaluation methods
The assessment for this course consists of two parts.
  • Written exam (14/20): This exam includes questions on linguistic analysis. Students will be required to demonstrate their ability to provide a comprehensive analysis by referring to the context and using the correct terminology.
  • Written assignment in pairs (6/20): a schedule and detailed description will be published on Moodle. If students use generative artificial intelligence (AI), it must be used responsibly and in accordance with academic and scientific integrity practices. Scientific integrity requires that sources be cited, so the use of AI must always be disclosed. The use of artificial intelligence for tasks where it is explicitly prohibited will be considered cheating.

The August session assessment consists of a written assignment (6/20) and a written exam (14/20). Students who failed the January session assignment must submit an improved version of their work.
The assessment is conducted entirely in Spanish.
