The course offers an overview of the major works of Spanish literature, from the late Middle Ages to the present day, with a particular focus on one or more contemporary works.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Place the works discussed in class within their historical, social, and literary contexts
 
2 Carefully analyze excerpts from the works in question
 
3 To gain a thorough understanding of a complex literary text in Spanish through independent reading
 
Content
This course is an introduction to Spanish literature. It offers a historical overview of the major works of Spanish literature and its legendary characters: “El Cid,” La Celestina, the “pícaro” (Lazarillo), Don Juan, and Don Quixote, among others. At the end of the semester, one or two modern works will be studied in depth; this year, these are Niebla by Miguel de Unamuno (1914) and La casa de Bernarda Alba (1936) by Federico García Lorca. The course will be taught in Spanish, and a handout with excerpts from the works is available on Moodle and at the DUC.
Teaching methods
This course alternates between lectures, text readings, and exercises in analyzing literary texts in Spanish (as part of the practical work).
Evaluation methods
In this course, students are assessed in two ways:
  • a written exam (open-ended questions) on the course content and text analysis exercises based on excerpts and/or works read during the course (75% of the final grade)
  • a practical exercise analyzing a literary text as part of the lab (25% of the final grade)
Completion of both assessments is required to pass the course.
