Content
This teaching unit consists of “equipping” students to become future high school mathematics teachers by encouraging them to put into practice, during their internships and in micro-teaching activities carried out during seminars, all the theoretical elements covered in the teaching methodology courses and seminars.
The long internship is carried out in two secondary schools, with internship supervisors who teach mathematics at the upper secondary level in a variety of contexts. The organizational arrangements will be defined in the Internship Guidelines (Vademecum).
The internship support seminar provides practical tools for preparing for the various aspects of the internship, as well as opportunities to share experiences, engage in reflective analysis, and receive individualized support.
Access to teaching internships is conditional on passing a test of mastery of the mathematical concepts to be taught in upper secondary school (grades 10, 11, and 12, including “mathematics for scientists”). Out of respect for the students and teachers who welcome trainees into their classrooms, it is essential that trainees have a thorough understanding of upper secondary mathematics concepts.
Pursuant to Article 36, §3 (FIE Decree of February 7, 2019), “For students enrolled in a graduate program leading to a master’s degree in education (Section 5) who are currently employed in upper secondary education, the work performed as part of this employment may be considered equivalent to teaching practicums.”
Each student’s professional situation will be evaluated by the academic coordinator for internships (length of service, number of hours of mathematics taught, target audience, etc.). A placement visit will be conducted at the student’s workplace to assess their competencies, and based on these, the number of placement hours to be completed at another institution under the supervision of a placement supervisor approved by UCLouvain will be determined.

Teaching methods
Alternating teaching methods: face-to-face, independent and supervised work time, practical experience in a professional setting, supervision meetings.
The seminar is taught in person and is designed around a co-development dynamic (collaborative learning).

Evaluation methods
Internships and seminars will be evaluated by the teaching team. Students will be evaluated as follows:
Internships cannot be repeated in the September session, as they take place in secondary schools. The same applies to the test on mathematical concepts. Only the reflective work can be repeated in the September session.
- Internships: 75%
- Reflective work (oral presentation in May): 15%
- Test of mastery of secondary school concepts (early October, handwritten one-page cheat sheet allowed): 10%
Attendance at the seminars is mandatory. Pursuant to Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the course instructors may propose to the jury that a student who has attended fewer than 80% of the seminars be denied registration for the June or September examination session.
The use of generative AI for work produced in this course unit is not permitted unless otherwise specified. In such cases, any use of generative artificial intelligence within this course unit must comply with the Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Faculty of Science (https://uclouvain.be/en/ai/documents). The use of AI must be explicitly acknowledged and referenced in accordance with the applicable rules. In all cases, students remain responsible for the content of their work, regardless of the sources used.Internships cannot be repeated in the September session, as they take place in secondary schools. Online resources
On Moodle UCLouvain, code LMAT2350. The Moodle space contains the documents presented and used during seminars and allows students to submit their work.
