Content
The course is an introduction to data sources, indicators and methods in population and development. The following points are covered:
  • The place of indicators and quantitative data in population and development (research, project and policy evaluation, etc.)
  • Introduction to the main data sources (surveys, censuses, administrative sources,...), with a focus on sample surveys.
  • Finding and using indicators at the aggregate level: access to data, data documentation (metadata)
  • Computing indicators: theoretical and practical aspects
  • Exploitation of indicators with univariate and bivariate methods.
Practical work includes the use of Excel and/or another software for analyzing the data. It allows students to become familiar with the use of aggregated data and micro-data (surveys) and to implement certain techniques seen in the course.
Teaching methods
Lecture and practical work (TP). Students are invited to participate actively in the course and the practical work.
Evaluation methods
The final grade, expressed out of 20 points, consists of several components: exercises during the term, a computer-based exam, and a written exam. Only the computer-based exam and the written exam may be retaken during the second session.
The completion of part or all of an assignment by third parties, or through ChatGPT or similar tools, is not permitted. An oral exam may be organised to check students' mastery of the content and analyses carried out.
The detailed arrangements for the course and its assessment will be presented during the first class session and recorded in a written document that will be made available on Moodle following that session.
