Content
Building on teaching unit LTRAD2400, which will focus on the key principles of subtitling, teaching unit LTRAD2411 will introduce the students to the subtitling process from German into French. It will deal with the different steps involved in subtitling, from the receipt of the audiovisual material (film, documentary, promotional presentation, news program, interview or live broadcast) to its delivery (appropriate formatting, use of professional subtitling software EZTitles, import to the subtitling software, production or verification of the scripts, spoken dialogues, subtitling and delivery of the translated subtitles in the format requested by the client). Students will also try their hand at subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing as part of an introduction.
The teaching unit will first focus on the analysis and the comparison of existing subtitles (already commercialised or available for free on the Internet) with the rules of subtitling.
Unlike more traditional translation work, one of the challenges of subtitling is to convey the maximum amount of information in a number of words defined by the amount of time available. The linguistic aspect (concision, accuracy, fluency, transition from the oral expression to the written text) of the subtitling work is as essential as the technical aspects.
