Translation of semi-specialised and specialised texts in the field of international and European relations in its various aspects (geopolitics, geostrategy, diplomacy, foreign policy, international/European law, etc.). 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme 
This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation: 
  • analyse a source document, identify potential textual and cognitive difficulties and assess the strategies and resources needed to reformulate it in line with communicative needs (1 – Translation); 
  • translate general and domain-specific material in one or several fields from one or several source languages into their target language(s), producing a ‘fit for purpose’ translation (6 – Translation); 
  • translate different types of material on and for different kinds of media and target audiences, using appropriate tools and techniques (7 – Translation); 
  • check, review, revise and evaluate their own work and that of others according to standard or work-specific quality objectives and assess the appropriateness of using tools for the work at hand (11 – Translation); 
  • use the most relevant IT applications, including the full range of office software, and adapt rapidly to new tools and IT resources having critically assessed their relevance and the impact of change on their work practices (15 – Technology); 
  • make effective use of search engines, corpus-based tools, text analysis tools, computer-assisted translation (CAT) and quality assurance (QA) tools where appropriate (16 – Technology). 
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit 
On completing this unit the student is able to: 
  • translate in a professional manner (respecting specifications) a text on matter pertaining to international and European relations employing documentary research and ensuring in the translation process to French to respect the author's intentions, the appropriate terminology and phraseology, as well as the rules of Turkish; 
  • carry out relevant and effective documentary and terminological research; 
  • identify documentation in French and in Turkish which is relevant and useful in dealing with the source text (comprehension, translation and accurate reformulation); 
  • identify and comprehend in the source text terms and concepts pertinent to the given domain of specialisation, with the aid of suitably informative texts in both French and Turkish; 
  • analyse the specific discursive character of the source text so as to identify the means to employ in ensuring functional harmony between source and target text. 
 
Content
- Translation of texts addressing theoretical approaches to international relations, focusing on related vocabulary as well as names and acronyms of international institutions.
The texts to be translated will give a general description of specific geopolitical situations, leading to discussions on the diplomatic and geopolitical situation of a given country, including but not limited to Turkey.
The course will try to address various aspects of geopolitical analysis (political, socioeconomic and diplomatic dimensions).
 
Teaching methods
Personal tutorial work, face-to-face
Evaluation methods
June session: evaluation through a written exam at the end of the teaching unit.
August-September session: written exam on the topics dealt with in the course.
The use of machine translation is strictly forbidden.
