The course aims to deepen the student’s theoretical knowledge in the field of digital studies, and more specifically to understand and analyse the sociocultural and communicational issues raised by the evolution of the internet and the development of digital media. In this regard, particular attention is given to how the growth of digital ecosystems and the resulting transformations of cultural industries perpetuate or renew different conceptual approaches to information and communication. After defining the relevant vocabulary and retracing the history of the web, the course provides a synthesis of the various theoretical perspectives that allow for a better understanding of it.

Teaching methods

The course is based on the analysis of a reading portfolio selected by the instructors at the start of the semester. It relies on the flipped classroom method. The texts identified for each session will have been read and prepared by students before the session.

Evaluation methods

First session:

• Continuous assessment and class attendance: each student presents an article reading at least once during the semester (20% of the grade, assessing the quality of the presentation and regular attendance throughout the semester)
• Written exam alternating closed and open questions (80% of the final grade)

Second session:

• Written exam alternating closed and open questions (80%)
• The continuous assessment grade obtained in the first session is retained (20%)

All relevant information regarding these modalities and the organization of the activities (schedule, detailed instructions, assessment criteria, etc.) is presented during the first session and is available on Moodle.
Some resources (e.g., bibliographic references or explanatory videos) may be provided in English.

Online resources will be progressively specified on Moodle during the semester, in accordance with the orientations of the course.
