This introduction to the subject will address the practical questions asked by any student and, more generally, by any citizen seeking to understand how political society and civil society are organised. What is ‘politics’, ‘policies’? What is power? What is legitimate power? What is a political system? What is democracy? Who are the main collective actors within the political system (parties, pressure groups)? What are the values – materialistic and ‘post-materialistic’ – held by citizens? What is the current state of citizens’ political participation? What are the main factors influencing voting behaviour? Is there a crisis of citizenship?

Assessment procedures
Assessment is continuous and concludes before the start of the examination period. The final mark, out of 20, is made up of several components:
multiple-choice tests;
news tests set during the sessions;
an exercise in drafting questions.
Organisation of Assessment
The specific arrangements for the organisation of the course and the assessment will be outlined by each lecturer during the first session and set out in a written document made available on Moodle following that session.
Smart devices and electronic equipment
The possession and/or use of any smart device or electronic equipment not expressly authorised (including, but not limited to, mobile phones, smart glasses, smartwatches, earphones, etc.) is prohibited throughout the duration of the relevant assessments, even when the device is switched off or not in use.
Use of artificial intelligence
The use of artificial intelligence tools is subject to the rules established in this regard by the ESPO Faculty, in particular those set out in the Faculty Board’s memorandum of 1 July 2024. Students are required to comply with these rules in the context of any work that is subject to assessment.
Irregularities and sanctions
Any breach of the assessment guidelines, whether intentional or not, may be reported as a suspected irregularity and will be dealt with in accordance with the procedure set out in Articles 107 to 113 of the General Regulations on Studies and Assessments (RGEE).
If the examination board deems such a breach to constitute an irregularity, it may result in a mark of 0/20 being awarded, without prejudice to any other sanctions provided for in the RGEE.
