Content: this annual course focuses on the techniques and use of different imaging methods in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Method: virtual course based on the book "Guide to Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy Technologies (Ed. Masson, JP Dillenseger, E. Moerschel)" and supplemented by documents available on the website (RDGN3120).
Content
The WRDGN3120 course is an online course (eLearning) based on the book "Guide to Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy Technologies" (Elsevier Masson, 3rd edition, 2024: https://www.elsevier-masson.fr/guide-des-technologies-de-limagerie-medicale-et-de-la-radiotherapie-9782294783173.html). It aims to teach the physical and technical principles of medical imaging – from digitization to image processing – fundamental physics of ionizing radiation – projection radiology – techniques and use of X-ray scanners (computed tomography) – nuclear medicine, including positron emission tomography (PET) – contrast agents (nuclear medicine) – incident and accident management – imaging artifacts – quality control (qualitative and quantitative evaluation of imaging systems).
Required knowledge for students:
Chapter 1 of the book/ Fundamental Physics of Ionizing Radiation The entire chapter.
Chapter 2 of the book/ Digitization in Medical Imaging The entire chapter except for paragraph 7 (p. 91) on AI.
Chapter 3 of the book/ Projection Radiology The entire chapter except for paragraph 4 (p. 139) on Detection Systems.
Chapter 4 of the book/ Computed Tomography The entire chapter. Chapter 7 of the book/ Nuclear Medicine The entire chapter.
Chapters 5 (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), 6 (Ultrasound), and 8 (Radiotherapy) are not required reading! Therefore, no exam questions will cover their content. However, it is strongly recommended that you read these chapters to broaden your general knowledge of medical imaging.
Registration for course WRDGN3120:
This course is included in the module "Certificate of Competence for the Use of X-rays in Medical Diagnosis - RXU 2CE" (which also includes courses WRPR2002 and WRPR3010). Physics students must first complete course LGBIO2050 before registering for course RDGN3120.
Continuous Assessment:
The WRDGN3120 course is an online course (e-learning) without continuous assessment. This course, focused on Physical Principles & Post-processing in Medical Imaging, is inherently rich and complex. Students are therefore advised to work on it regularly throughout the year, conduct their own research on the subject, discuss it with other enrolled students, and contact the instructors with any questions, explanations, or additional information on imaging techniques.
Passing Grade:
A grade strictly below 8/20 is a failing grade and cannot be used to calculate an average with the other two courses (WRPR2002 and WRPR3010). In this case, the student must retake the WRDGN3120 exam to obtain their certificate.

These supplementary files (in powerpoint or pdf format) may be downloaded from the MOODLE web-site of the UCL at the following web address:

It is therefore strongly recommended that you at least read the CT course material (exam questions may be based on it). It is also advisable to conduct your own research on artifacts in medical imaging. We recommend consulting websites such as Radiopaedia to familiarize yourself with their appearance and the technical means of correcting them.

Finally, it is recommended that you complete the practice multiple-choice quiz (which will be sent by email with the course instructions) to test your knowledge and get a preview of the exam. Although optional, it allows you to assess your own progress! This quiz should be completed honestly to be worthwhile. Students will need to individually return this completed MCQ by email to the course leader (Nicolas Michoux) to obtain the correction.

The exam takes place in June, and a second session is held in August/September.
The use of books (including the textbook or others), handwritten notes, smartphones, tablets, or laptops is not permitted during the exam.
The exam includes:
- Single-choice questions
- Multiple-choice questions with multiple correct answers
- Matching, ordering, and categorization questions
- Opened questions requiring the cite of a definition, a formula, etc.
- Opened questions requiring the explanation of a principle or the performance of a simple calculation
For all students (MACCS, Connexistes, and Physics):
The mandatory final exam consists of a 25-question multiple-choice test covering Chapters 1-2-3-4-7 of the book. This exam must be completed in one hour. Answering a question, even incorrectly, will not result in a lower grade than if you had not answered it.
The written exam grade counts 100% for medical students (MACCS, connexistes).
For Physics students:
In addition to the multiple-choice exam, a 20-minute critical presentation of a scientific article in medical imaging will be required. This presentation will be given on a computer (in the Radiology Department at Cliniques Saint-Luc) using PowerPoint, on a date separate from the mandatory multiple-choice exam. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session (covering the study context, the relevance of the methodology, understanding the technical principles, critical analysis of the results, and critical analysis of the discussion). General knowledge questions covering the entire WRDGN3120 course will also be asked. Students are therefore expected to present the context, accurately summarize the article, highlight the key results and their implications, and offer a critique of the results and the methodology used by the authors. For this type of exercise, it is often necessary to locate and read certain references cited in the article, as well as supplement one's understanding of the article with additional reading. The articles to be analyzed will be emailed to students at the beginning of April. Students are advised to contact the course instructors if they have any questions about the "critical review of a study" exercise.
For Physics students, the multiple-choice quiz accounts for 50% of the final grade. The critical review of the article also accounts for 50% of the final grade.

It is recommended to approach this presentation exercise from the following perspective (although students are free to approach the exercise from another angle):
- Present the context of the study (problem, technique, clinical issue), then reframe this context more generally (in relation to other techniques that would be used to address the same issues, in relation to other clinical issues that would use the same techniques, etc.).
- Present and discuss the Materials & Methods section (i.e., the study methodology), briefly reviewing the theoretical principles of the imaging modalities used, the image post-processing tools, and the data analysis tools.
- Summarize the results and their implications, comparing these results with those published in other articles on similar topics (use the references listed at the end of the article to begin this literature search, then use the website https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ to access relevant articles).
- Discuss and critique the accuracy of the analyses, the study's limitations, its internal and external validity (i.e., the extent to which the results are consistent and generalizable), the study's conclusions, and its overall relevance.
Physics students will be judged according to the following 4 points: the quality of the oral and written presentation, the quality of the synthesis of information, the quality of the critique of the methodology and results of the article, as well as the background theoretical knowledge (questions on the WRDGN3120 course).
