Content
By the end of this course unit, students are able to:
  • Understand the principles of the evolution of life and the underlying genetic mechanisms.
  • Understand how these principles were shaped over time through theories of evolution, and how our current knowledge consolidates Darwinian evolutionary theory.
  • Master the principles of taxonomy.
  • Interpret phylogenetic trees.
  • Present the scenarios envisaged for the appearance of life.
  • Master the principle of the experimental approach in biology, which aims to test a hypothesis through experimentation.
  • Understand the scientific logic underlying the production of biological knowledge.
  • Link theoretical concepts in biology to the experimental methods that made it possible to demonstrate them.
  • Master the principles of analysis and interpretation of experimental results in biology.
In terms of content, the course will cover:
  • Origin of the concept of evolution based on observations
  • Darwinian theory of evolution, factors of evolution, and evolution of genomes
  • Principles of phylogenetic classification
  • The origins of life
  • Principles of the experimental approach
  • Discovery of DNA as the carrier of genetic information
  • Experimental demonstrations of the processes of replication, transcription and translation
  • Ways in which mutations and changes in genetic information arise: their consequences and transmission
