At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This course aims to shed light on the different components of the history of institutions and law in the 19th and 20th centuries. If politics and political history are defined by texts (Constitution, laws, regulations…), other instances should also be taken into account. Besides the institutional frame, we will insist on the role played by governors, political parties, lobbies, public opinion and ideologies. The course will also show how political history is closely linked to the evolution of international relations, economic fluctuations and social upheavals.
 
Content
This course is about political and institutional history of Belgium from the 1780s to the 1980s.
Chapter I: Parliament, electoral law and political parties
Chapter II: The use of languages
Chapter III: Religions, churches and education
Chapter IV: Judicial Institutions and Criminal Policy
Chapter V: Economic Change and Work
Teaching methods
This course is a lecture. Any course materials (outline, power point,
bibliography, etc.) are available on Moodle. The subject is what
said during the course. Regular attendance is therefore strongly recommended.
Evaluation methods
Written examination, consisting of one essay-type question (14pts) and three short questions (6pts). The exam assesses the student's knowledge of the subject as well as their ability to reason, make links and argue on a problem that deals with a topic covered in the course.
