Main themes
The course addresses the themes of human dependence and influence on biodiversity in the Anthropocene era and the factors that explain these interactions, in their philosophical, legal and socio-economic dimensions.

Content
This course will be given in collaboration between Professors Charles-Hubert Born and Thierry Hance.
The object of the course is to analyze the relationships of interdependence, positive and negative, of human beings and biodiversity in the Anthropocene era, in their legal, socio-economic and public health dimensions, in the world and in Belgium. The themes that will be covered are broad, including:
- The way in which legal systems organize man's control over nature and the exploitation of resources (sovereignty, property, patents, etc.) but also how these systems attempt to place limits on the effects of this control (preservation and sustainable exploitation of biodiversity, climate) and through what governance (international, European and internal).
- Health-biodiversity relationships, particularly in the case of the emergence of zoonoses and the concept of One-Health. The relationships between growth, capitalism and pressures on biodiversity will also be analyzed to define possible approaches to an economy concerned with planetary limits, in particular the paths for a transformation of organizations and behaviors.

Teaching methods
The course requires the active participation of students. After an introductory session at the beginning or middle of the term, students are invited to read a portfolio of readings before the actual lectures. These are concentrated at the end of the term in modules of 2 or 4 hours. They include an introductory lecture, a debate on the readings related to the subject of the module and an assessment at the end of the course, via MCQs. Where appropriate, experts or players may take part.
Evaluation methods
Part of the assessment is continuous, with 50% of the points awarded in the form of multiple-choice questions during each module session. The remaining 50% of the assessment takes the form of a written examination (a separate questionnaire for each part of the course) during the session. The examination is open book and consists of writing a short critical essay on one of the themes covered in the course.
