The "Drawing 1 - City and Territory" studio offers a graphic exploration of a situated territory. Drawing is here the place for research, for the creation of a problematic, a thought, a hypothesis-producing device, open to doubt and to modes of research, in that it makes it possible to manipulate, test and propose readings (and writings) of spaces, towns and territories.
This is a teaching unit which, through territorial drawings, engages students in reading and understanding the territory and the city, and in proposing changes to them. In practical terms, students are required to draw a given territory and to insert it a given project.
Teaching methods
The "Drawing 1" teaching unit is given in a workshop format which, through drawing the city and the territory, engages students in reading, understanding, writing and transforming the forms and rationality of our environment.
Analysis and drawing merge into a single process of description which, although never-ending, builds hypotheses for investigation and avenues for design. It provides the starting point for the architectural project without taking on its complexity. Throughout the process, questions of representation are addressed at several scales.
Evaluation methods
This activity is subject to continuous assessment. In accordance with article 78 of the General Regulations governing studies and examinations, the final assessment (jury) will be held only once. It will therefore not be possible to re-sit this activity at either the June or September sessions.

Only a significant absence with a medical certificate (of 2 weeks) can justify an assessment at the September session.

An absence justified by a medical certificate at a jury meeting will be assessed at the examination session of the term in which the activity was organized.
Assessment is carried out in two ways. On the one hand, continuous assessment is carried out by the teaching team, which considers the student's continuous and iterative work from session to session. Secondly, a final assessment, in the form of a jury, evaluates the student's conclusion and presentation of their work. The jury consists of an oral and graphic presentation of the student's drawing work, followed by an open discussion on the relevance of the drawings with the teaching team and any invited experts. It takes place during the last workshop session.
These two parts, continuous assessment and summary presentation, are worth 60 and 40% of the course credits respectively.
The assessment focuses on the student's ability to meet the learning outcomes of the course, i.e. :
- Drawing the territory
- Set up a small building / programme
- Reasoning about the relationship between these two operations and presenting this reasoning
Other information
The final assessment of the work is carried out by a jury made up of the teachers and external guests. An intermediate assessment is organized during a pre-jury session. The course is taught in French.
