Prerequisites

Main themes
Students will take part in activities that will allow them to use and develop their communication skills and mastery of the language (principally speaking skills) in situations such as:
-       Reading complex scientific texts' as well as understanding their content-specific and content-compatible vocabulary
-       Presentations on scientific topics
-       Participation in and leading of group projects and meetings
Negotiations, exchanging ideas, building up an argument

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Reading Comprehension
'Students should be able to read autonomously and understand in detail scientific texts and specialised articles related to their field of studies
The level to reach is B2+ of the "Common European Framework for Languages"
Speaking Skills
'Individual: Students should be able to present a scientific topic in a clear and methodical way with only occasional reference to their notes
Interactive: Students should be able to communicate fluently and effectively in meetings and conversations on both social and professional topics

Content
Students will be given a host of language aids (communication techniques, language functions, general and specialized vocabulary, grammatical points) and resources (written documents, audio-visual supports, internet sites) before each activity, thus enabling them to participate fully in each situation, the ultimate goal of the course being a presentation on a scientific topic related to their field of studies. Feedback and remedial sessions will be provided. Detailed instructions concerning each activity will be provided beforehand.
Teaching methods
Workshop
Groups of maximum 15 students
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment (50 %) (class preparation, participation in all class activities, with a particular emphasis on an oral presentation given in class, vocabulary test, pronunciation test
Oral exam (50 %): a presentation on a scientific topic related to the student's field of studies. This will be done in collaboration with a Professor from the 'Ecole de Pharmacie' (Prof. Dalleur, who will be in charge of 1/3 of the grading of the oral exam).
The student will lose 25 % of their grade if they are absent from class more than twice without any form of justification.
