This is an optical microscopy image of a crack propagating left to right in a 1.5mm thick high strength steel sheet. This "wave" pattern, known as crack tip flipping, is the result of an oscillating stress state in front of the crack tip, causing the crack to oscillate on two 45° degree planes though the thickness.
