The Profit Paradox Lecture

Based on the book The Profit Paradox by Jan Eeckhout.

In the context of the new course "Using Economic Tools to Solve Global Challenges" (LECON2806), Guilhem Cassan and Amma Panin are pleased to invite you to a special lecture by Professor Jan Eeckhout on his book, The Profit Paradox.

In this work, Professor Eeckhout examines how the increasing dominance of large firms has led to soaring profits but stagnant wages, widening inequality, and lower economic dynamism. His analysis provides insights into the paradox that while corporate success should benefit the broader economy, excessive market power is eroding competition and worker prosperity.

This discussion promises to be both engaging and thought-provoking. We look forward to seeing you there.

The lecture will take place on 31 March from 12:45 to 14:00 in SOCR 40.

In collaboration with the Economics School of Louvain and the Economics School of Namur.

Jan Eeckhout is the ICREA Research Professor of Economics at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona. His research focuses on the macroeconomic implications of market power, labor markets, and urban economics. He is the author of "The Profit Paradox," a book examining how dominant firms impact the future of work. His scholarly work has been published in leading economics journals and featured in prominent media outlets such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, The New York Times, and Bloomberg. Professor Eeckhout has held academic positions at institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, University College London, and Princeton University, and is a fellow of the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association, and Academia Europaea.
