Low Mach number flows: Numerical methods and asymptotic consistency by Václav Kučera

February 22, 2024

10:00

Louvain-la-Neuve

Avenue Georges Lemaitre, 4-6 - room A.002

In computational fluid dynamics, low Mach number flows present an  important yet difficult task. These flows live on the border between two  completely different worlds - compressible and incompressible - thus  presenting considerable challenges for numerical methods. Explicit  schemes are typically out of the question while implicit schemes are  very computationally demanding. We will present a class of linearly  implicit schemes for the compressible Euler equations.

INGI Seminar - The essence of scalability

March 06, 2024

12:45-14:00

Free

Louvain-la-Neuve

BARB 03 - Place Sainte Barbe

The ability to scale up is an essential ability for large computer systems that handle numerous simultaneous tasks reliably. It follows that these systems must support parallelism for performance and redundancy for fault tolerance. But parallelism and redundancy are not the most important abilities needed for scalability. A scalable system will, simply because it is scalable, often be pushed beyond its capacity to work. It will be overloaded.

INGI Seminar - Expressive classification rule learning with an emphasis on learning from sequential data

February 26, 2024

12:45-14:00

Free

Louvain-la-Neuve

BARB 00 - Place Sainte Barbe

Machine learning, specifically neural networks, have seen significant advancements in classification tasks across various fields. Although they achieve high accuracy, their decision-making process is often incomprehensible to humans.
Rule-based methods, on the other hand, are interpretable and widely used in industries with Business Rules Management Systems.
In practice, however, these rules are written manually by experts and cannot easily be replaced by learned rules because of their limited complexity when obtained with existing methods.
