Inclusion through Multimodal and Participatory Design: Accessible Interfaces, Sonification, and Haptic Feedback

BIO: Emma Frid is an engineer and researcher specialized in accessible technology and human-centered design. She holds a PhD in Sound and Music Computing from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and has previously conducted research at IRCAM STMS Lab (PDS Sound Perception and Design, Paris), Adobe Research (Creative Intelligence Lab, San Francisco), and McGill University (IDMIL Input Devices & Music Interaction Lab, Montréal). Her work focuses primarily on multimodal interface design involving auditory and haptic feedback.

ABSTRACT: This presentation will explore research conducted at the intersection of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Sound and Music Computing (SMC), and Accessibility studies, focused on multimodal interfaces designed to promote inclusion through integration of sound, haptics, and visual feedback. By combining multiple feedback modalities these interfaces create rich and engaging interactions while addressing barriers that single-modality systems may present to certain users. A set of case studies on multisensory systems involving sonification (auditory representation of data), musical haptics, humanoid robots, and Accessible Digital Musical Instruments (ADMIs) will be discussed. The presentation will highlight both technical approaches and participatory design methods that center users with diverse abilities in the design and development process.
