Olivier Luminet est directeur de recherche auprès du Fond belge pour la Recherche Scientifique (FRS-FNRS), professeur extraordinaire à l’Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) et chargé de cours à l’Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Durant sa carrière, il a effectué de longs séjours de recherche dans les universités de Toulouse (France), Manchester (UK) et Toronto (Canada).
Ses thématiques s’articulent autour de deux grands thèmes. Le premier concerne les liens entre émotion, identité et mémoire. Il mène notamment des études sur les déterminants émotionnels et cognitifs des souvenirs flash (‘flashbulb memories’) et leur impact sur la mémoire collective. Il est co-éditeur d’un livre de référence sur la question publié par Psychology Press (nouvelle édition en 2017).
Le deuxième thème s’intéresse aux interactions entre émotions, personnalité et santé. Dans cette perspective, il mène depuis plus de 20 ans des études sur des populations générales et cliniques afin de mieux comprendre les effets de traits de personnalité liés à l’identification, à la compréhension et à l’expression des émotions sur le traitement implicit et explicite de l’information et à plus long terme sur des indicateurs de santé physique et mentale. Spécialiste de l’alexithymie, il est l’auteur de plus de 50 références sur cette thématique et est éditeur principal d’un livre publié fin 2018 par Cambridge University Press, ainsi qu'un special issue de Cognition & Emotion en 2021.
Depuis 2020, il est également impliqué dans des recherches sur l’impact de la pandémie de covid19 sur les comportements et le bien-être.
