Main themes
Analysis of linguistic phenomena through the critical study of grammars published at the time of the formalisation of the Italian language, the introduction of compulsory state schooling and the introduction of the established norm at the beginning of the 20th century.
Students will observe the establishment of a norm and the differences between this norm and the actual linguistic behavior. Thus, when the actual use of the subjunctive is verified using corpora, it turns out to be much more complex than the school standard seems to imply.
The use of the subjunctive or of the conditional was hardly formalised in the 19th century. The concordance of tenses is hardly ever dealt with. Pragmatics is also absent from textbooks.
By analysing a corpus of texts, we can revisit certain preconceived ideas about the norm. It also shows the complexity of the use of these forms in concrete texts.
