Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The course will enable students to acquire or strengthen their skills – including at the lexical level – in iconographic analysis and in literary analysis. They will be able to develop and present a reflection, in Italian, on the connections between an artistic product and a literary product, emphasizing the context of their production. 
This teaching unit contributes to the development and mastery of the following skills and knowledge from the School of Languages and Arts syllabus (see ELAL AA table): 1.1; 1.2; 2.1; 3.1; 3.2; 4.1; 6.1; 6.3 
 
Content
Italian opera has had an exceptional social, cultural and political impact in Europe and throughout the world. Although in the eighteenth century Italian opera was an essentially a European phenomenon, in the nineteenth century it conquered the Americas and other continents.
We will study the narratological and cognitive structures that allowed such a success. We will examine the modes of reception (the dissemination of libretti  as a literary genre, staging, etc.), political and social implications, as well as adaptation strategies, fundamental to understanding Italian opera.
The student will be able to read a booklet, to understand its structure and to foresee the musical realization.
Teaching methods
Lecture course
Two tutorials of your choice:
  • Deepening/rehearsal of Italian grammar and vocabulary
  • Reading, analysis, discussion of texts treated in the lecture
Evaluation methods
Cascade Examination
First session:
  1. Written test on the compulsory reading
  2. Scientific paper written according to academic standards to be submitted by the beginning of the session (40%).
A student who does not submit a paper or a paper that does not meet the academic standards is not admitted to the in-session written examination.
A student is required to make 10 out of 20 in the written test in order to access the in-session exams.
  1. In-session written examination on the content of the lecture course (40%).
  2. Examination of the contents of the monitoring course (20%)
Second session:
  1. Scientific paper written according to academic standards to be submitted by the beginning of the session (40%).
A student who does not submit a paper or a paper that does not meet the academic standards is not admitted to the in-session written examination.
In-session:
  1. In-session written examination on the content of the lecture course (40%).
  2. Examination of the contents of the monitoring course (20%)
