Main themes
Students carry out an internship in either a research or a professional sector. It corresponds either to activities proposed by members or teams based at UCLouvain, or to an individual project of the student. The latter is to be approved by the student’s supervisor.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 integrate into a professional environment by showing qualities of adaptation, initiative and organisation;

2 participate actively in the activities of a particular professional field as an art historian or archaeologist.

Content
The internship provides students with an opportunity to gain awareness of, closely observe and participate in professional activities in a sector related to the disciplines taught in archaeology and art history, and to put their theoretical learning into practice through concrete professional experience in a specific field. It also enables students to develop a critical understanding of the principles and considerations underlying the work of professionals in the field concerned.
Students undertake their internship in an external institution and/or within UCLouvain, involved in the scientific, administrative or museological management of cultural heritage. The internship may also be complemented by one or more activities agreed upon with the UCLouvain academic supervisor (Master’s thesis supervisor).
The internship must last a minimum of 30 working days. Its composition may vary depending on the activities selected, the student’s study track and the requirements of the host institution, and must be agreed upon with the UCLouvain academic supervisor.
For students in the Archaeology track following the specialised finalitéThéories, gestion et sciences de l'archéologie, the internship must include at least five working days specifically devoted to the management, conservation and enhancement of archaeological or natural science collections; the study of archaeological objects or materials; or the processing and dissemination of research and expert findings (exhibitions, educational materials or projects, etc.). To this end, students are encouraged to undertake their internship outside the university, in Belgian or international scientific institutions (specialised laboratories and scientific institutions, museums, public archaeology and heritage services, research centres, etc.).
Teaching methods
The student contacts their UCLouvain academic supervisor with an internship proposal. If the proposal is approved, the student signs the internship agreement and risk assessment form and has both documents signed first by the internship supervisor at the host institution and then by the UCLouvain academic supervisor. Once all documents have been completed and signed, the student submits the complete documentation to the administrative office no later than 15 days before the internship start date.
If the host institution requires specific arrangements (specific or adapted agreements, particular requirements regarding the duration of the internship, etc.), the student must contact their academic supervisor and the administrative office in advance.
Evaluation methods
Once the internship has ended, the student asks their internship supervisor to complete an evaluation form, which the student then submits to the UCLouvain supervisor.
Evaluation is based on a final written internship report submitted by the student in accordance with the guidelines provided. In assessing the report, the UCLouvain academic supervisor will take into account the evaluation provided by the internship supervisor(s) who supervised the internship(s) at the host institution. The report, together with the internship evaluation form(s), must be submitted by email to the academic supervisor on the first day of the examination session for which the student has registered for this course (a more specific deadline may be agreed with the UCLouvain academic supervisor).
When preparing the report, generative artificial intelligence (AI), if used, must be employed responsibly and in accordance with the principles of academic and scientific integrity. Since scientific integrity requires sources to be acknowledged, any use of AI must always be disclosed.
Other information
During the internship, interns are subject to the workplace regulations in force at the host institution.
Online resources
All documentation concerning good practices, the forms to be completed or submitted for completion, the procedures to be followed, and the name of the UCLouvain academic supervisor is available on the course Moodle page.
