Humaniste, archéologue et historien de l'art classique (Grèce, Étrurie et Rome), Marco Cavalieri s'est formé à l'Université de Parme, où il a obtenu son diplôme de licence en 1996. Après une thèse doctorale (3e cycle) à l’Université de Florence (1999) et une dissertation postdoctorale à l’Université de Pérouse (2003), et à la suite d’un séjour à Paris (bourse de recherche à l’Université de Paris I - Sorbonne et à l’EPHE), il a été engagé à l’UCLouvain en septembre 2003. Il est président honoraire de l'Institut des civilisations, arts et lettres (INCAL).
Il est spécialiste de l’urbanisme, de l’architecture et de la sculpture de l’Italie et des provinces romaines de l’Occident ; il a dirigé et participé à de nombreuses fouilles archéologiques dans le Frioul Vénétie-Julienne, en Émilie Romagne, en Toscane, dans le Latium, en Sicile, en Sardaigne en Albanie et Belgique. Au nom de l’UCLouvain, il est responsable scientifique de la fouille archéologique à la villa romaine d’Aiano (Commune de San Gimignano, Sienne) de la mission archéologique à Cures Sabini (province de Rieti), capitale du peuple sabin, ainsi que du projet ARC de recherche archéologique en collaboration avec l'UNamur, à Ostie, port de Rome.

The project, completed in 2012, has been resumed since 2013 to focus more specifically on the sanctuaries of Northern Italy, and in particular on the excavation of the Ligurian-Roman sanctuary on the summit of the Valoria Pass (province of Parma, responsible).
