Main themes
This course will introduce students to general sociology, providing them with the keys to sociological analysis of social phenomena. This will involve an introduction to the sociological approach (construction of the object), the methods used to study a social phenomenon, and the major paradigms of the discipline. The course will then address a number of key sociological concepts (norms and values, socialization, social control, habitus and social classes, labeling, gender, etc.) based on specific themes such as crime and deviance, social inequality, the family and migration. Throughout the course, students will be invited to reflect on the relationship between law and society.
Content
The course will cover the following chapters (subject to change during the term):
- The "founding figures" of the discipline
- Social structure and social processes (notions, concepts)
- The functions of sociology
- Major contemporary paradigms
Following these theoretical sessions, more ‘thematic’ sessions, relating to contemporary issues (The sociology of consumption, sociology of migration, sociology of globalisation, sociology of gender, etc.) are planned throughout the term.

All teaching will aim to present a diverse range of authors and perspectives, paying particular attention to the work of women scholars, knowledge produced in the Global South, and approaches that allow for the intersection and decentring of sociological traditions, so as not to limit references solely to male authors from the Global North.
Teaching methods
In-person lecture-based course.
Active student participation will be encouraged.
Evaluation methods
Multiple choice questions, closed-book.
Online resources
Resources will be available on the course’s Moodle page, including the PowerPoint presentations used in class and additional materials.
