Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme 
This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation: 
  • analyse and justify their translation solutions and choices, using the appropriate metalanguage and applying appropriate theoretical approaches (10 – Translation). 
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit 
On completing this unit the student is able to: 
  • define an issue relating to the English-French language pair that can be addressed in the context of translation studies and/or interpreting studies; 
  • select scientific publications relevant to the issue identified; 
  • give an oral presentation of the selected publications, highlighting their relevance to the issue identified, the similarities and differences between different approaches and points of view, and whether they are sufficient or insufficient to address the issue chosen; 
  • produce a written assignment including a critical review of the scientific literature and an analysis demonstrating either the effectiveness of the concepts and analytical tools proposed in the literature or the need to adapt them or create new ones; 
  • present and defend their work during a critical discussion. 
 
Content
In the first part of the course assignments in class provide opportunities to reflect on some basic concepts in Translation Studies and to help each student develop a research question they will go on to address.
In the second part of the course students pursue and present their own research (compiling a bibliography, discussing the approaches they have found in the literature, synthesizing an answer to their research question).

In-class assignments; take-home assignments; class discussion; student presentations; peer and instructor feedback
Evaluation methods
Active participation in the seminar is a prerequisite for taking part in the assessment
Assessment is based on a written submission (paper) and a viva voce defence of that submission (oral exam)
