Elle portera sur sa perception de la situation actuelle de la sociologie américaine et, entre autres choses, du rôle déclinant qu’y tient la théorie. Nous avons demandé à Robin Wagner-Pacifici, auteure d’ouvrages de théorie sociologique comme What Is An Event? (University of Chicago Press, 2017), Professeure émérite de la New School for Social Research et qui enseigne actuellement à l’Université de Pennsylvanie, d’ouvrir la discussion.

Theory and the Current State of American Sociology 

Sociological theory in the United States faces both internal disciplinary pressures, as well as new challenges that stem from technological shifts and the political environment. The talk will outline some of these broad challenges. On a disciplinary level, I will outline the "parcelization" of sociological theory into a series of local sub-disciplinary interventions, and the relationship between theoretical work and the emphasis on inequality that currently undergirds the discipline. Second, I will outline some shifts and pressures that emerge as a result of broader shifts: on a technological level, both the rise of computational sociology and the challenges of AI; on a political level, the mounting pressures on research and the categories we use given sociology's history and subject matter.
