The Centre for Natural Language Processing (CENTAL) is a technology platform and a research laboratory that brings together numerous researchers specializing in the computational processing of textual data. It contributes its expertise through research, service to society, as well as teaching.

Natural language processing (NLP), and text mining in particular, are now an integral part of our daily lives. This discipline, situated at the crossroads of linguistics and computer science, is part of the field of artificial intelligence. It aims to develop a set of techniques based on algorithms, statistical models, and linguistic resources that make it possible to automate language-related tasks, whether for automatically generating or interpreting language.

History

CENTAL is a research structure established in 2001, building on the foundations of a center created in the late 1960s. CETEDOC (Centre de traitement électronique des documents / Centre for Electronic Document Processing) specialized at the time in developing Latin databases and data banks. Today, CENTAL has broadened its field of investigation to include language engineering and natural language processing applied to modern languages.
