Unveiling the tempestuous mixing above a heated porous matrix

This image illustrates vertical temperature gradients during turbulent convection within a mixed pure-fluid/porous domain. The porous region, shown as a white parallelepiped at the base of the image, contains a heated solid matrix that warms the nearby fluid and initiates thermal convection.  The temperature contrast between the hot fluid in the porous region and the colder fluid near the top of the domain results in buoyancy, leading to the development of convective structures. The intertwined red (positive) and blue (negative) vertical temperature gradients highlight the intricate mixing between descending cold plumes and rising warmflows especially above the porous medium.
